Smores are ESSENTIAL to camping.
The appeal of camping centers largely around traditions. Camp songs, Camp games, specific foods, and specific places all combine to make a camping trip something special and different. Making smores around the campfire is one tradition that is so common that people from all over have heard of them. A smore is a tasty treat made over a campfire with graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate.
The Key to Smores
But how do you make a smore? It’s also a common camping story of an attempt at making smores that ended up messy. If you try to place all the ingredients in the fire, at best you will get a tasty mess. The key to making a smore is to know that the heat of the marshmallow is what will melt the chocolate. You don’t need to put the chocolate in the fire: it will melt and drip away. Here is what you need to make a smore:
Graham crackers (Crackers laced with honey crumble less easily.)
Marshmallows (Large fresh puffy ones).
Chocolate. (Use a thin chocolate bar, so that there is less to melt.)
You also need a good camping table close to your fire so you can build your smores easily. We recommend this table below.
Steps to Making a Smore
You need a table of some kind near your fire: not too close. On the table put down your cracker with a strip of chocolate on it. You will want the cracker you will use as a top sitting there as well. Cook your marshmallow to your liking. It is important that it be hot when it is ready. At that time, place the marshmallow on the chocolate and top it with the other cracker. Press the top cracker down as you slowly remove your cooking stick from the marshmallow. Let the smore sit for a bit, maybe even 30 seconds. The chocolate will have melted. Eat carefully. It may be still hot. If all went well, the chocolate will be messy.
Take Your Smores to the Next Level
For the very best smores, start with an award-winning smores kit from Laura’s Candy. This is an example of a tradition you can implement to make your camping trips extra-special. Imagine the anticipation of not only having smores at your campfire, but having gourmet smores.
Eating a Smore
Touch the marshmallow of your smore with your tongue or a finger to see if it is cool enough. Hold the crackers and bite the smore like a sandwich. Hold a plate or bowl so that drippings have a place to land. Take care for the heat, although by now it won’t scald your mouth. For extra fun, sing a camping song with your mouth full of a smore. Then go cook some more. After all some more is the meaning of smores.
